Maccabi Haifa did not win the championship or the cup this season, but it wanted to at least end the 2023/24 season and say goodbye to Masai Dego and Anan Halaili with a victory in the derby, but in practice the exact opposite happened and the team recorded its first loss in the Haifa derby in three and a half years, 2:0 to Hapoel Haifa.
The last time the red side of Carmel celebrated in a derby it was somewhere in November 2020 with a 1:2 and a dramatic goal by Liran Sardal in extra time. Today, that Sardel was part of the team that recorded the prestigious victory and one of the best games of Roni Levy’s team this season.
The veteran coach this season put together a team to glory, which ended a wonderful season and hopes that Hapoel Beer Sheva will win the state cup and give them the ticket to the conference league qualifiers. On the other hand, Dego ends a disappointing season and term on a harsh note, but at the same time also with good memories that he leaves with the green fans.
After the respectable recognition ceremonies that Maccabi Haifa did at the opening for those who are leaving, the game started and after only three minutes it was stopped due to smoke grenades that were lit in the stands that house the green fans. In the ninth minute, the game resumed, but throughout the first half we didn’t see too many notable situations and events, except for Dean David’s goal which was disallowed in the 36th minute after the VAR system saw that his ball did not cross the line, thanks to an amazing save by Fernand Maiambo.
12 minutes into the extra time, Abdoulaye Sak touched his hand inside the box and after a VAR check, the referee Naal Odeh, who had a very bad game for him, whistled for a penalty. Guy Melamed did not get confused and brought Hapoel Haifa into the half with a lead. Two minutes from the start of the second half, the great striker doubled with an excellent kick from the right end of the box and sealed a tremendous personal season for him with 17 goals, in fourth place in the top scorers table of the Premier League.
The greens tried to get back into the game but were not dangerous enough and the game only got hotter with many yellow cards on both sides. In the 69th minute, the substitute Elie Feingold made a bitter mistake when he passed back, teaching a pen on the prey and was fouled by Sherif Kif, who was sent off with a red card. Nine minutes later, Ali Muhammad was also sent off, after a VAR check, for a serious foul on Dmitri Antilevsky, and Maccabi Haifa remained with ten players, which did not change the outcome of the game.
