China has announced a new round of interest-free loan write-offs for more than 20 African countries, in a move aimed at easing the debt burden on African countries.
The South China Morning Post quoted observers as saying: “This step addresses only a small part of the total debt burden on these countries.”
Beijing said other players such as the World Bank needed to take a “more equitable” share in resolving Africa’s debt problems.
Beijing announced, during the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) summit last week, that it would waive interest-free international government loans for 33 African countries that were due by the end of this year.
