With one receiver joining the fold, another may be on the way out for the New York Jets.

After NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported Tuesday that the Jets acquired Davante Adams from the Las Vegas Raiders for a conditional third-round pick, NFL insider Josina Anderson noted some around the league are “wondering” whether New York will now make wide receiver Mike Williams available in a trade.

Insider Jordan Schultz added more context:

Things have not gone according to plan for the Jets and Williams this season.

While the AFC East team signed him this past offseason, he has just 10 catches for 145 yards and zero touchdowns through six games. He also slipped on Aaron Rodgers’ final pass of Monday’s loss to the Buffalo Bills, and the throw was intercepted by Taron Johnson.

His brief tenure with the Jets has been a far cry from when he went over 1,000 yards two different times for the Los Angeles Chargers during the first seven years of his career. He also led the NFL with 20.4 yards per reception in 2019 and had 10 touchdown catches in 2018.

Yet Williams was limited to just three games last season because of a torn ACL and hasn’t looked like the same receiver he was prior to the injury this year.

There are also only so many targets to go around, as Adams becomes the No. 1 option on a team that already features Garrett Wilson and Allen Lazard at wide receiver along with Breece Hall and Braelon Allen at running back.

Williams likely won’t see many chances with all those skill position players surrounding Rodgers, and trading him for any draft compensation it can get may be the best alternative for New York’s front office.

He likely won’t command a significant return price, but a change of scenery could be the best option for all involved.
