The Spanish Pep Guardiola, coach of Manchester City, pledged to solve the problems of his team, which suffered a shocking loss against its host Sporting 4-1 on Tuesday, in the fourth round of the European Champions League.

City suffered its third loss in a row in various competitions, after being eliminated from the League Cup by Tottenham 1-2, and losing to Bournemouth with the same score in the league.

The loss to Sporting is City’s heaviest since 2020, and it is only the second time in Guardiola’s era that the team has suffered 3 consecutive losses in one season.

City’s crisis comes amid a wave of injuries that affected key players such as Spaniard Rodri, Portuguese Ruben Diaz, John Stones, Jack Grealish and Belgian Kevin De Bruyne, who came on as a substitute in the 85th minute.
“We struggle to score,” Guardiola said. “We create chances and concede goals when opponents don’t do much.”

The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich coach pointed out that injuries and defense problems had left their effects on his team.

He added, “When you play a lot of matches, you cannot rely on the same formation and the same defense. We have had these problems since day one, but that is the way it is.”

The Spaniard continued, “This is football. Maybe what we experienced in the past was an exception. Sometimes you can lose. Now is a difficult time in terms of results, but I want to be here. I want to fight and not give up.”

In turn, Portuguese midfielder Bernardo Silva said, “It is disappointing because we are in a somewhat dark situation. Everything seems to be going in the wrong direction.”

He added, “Even when we play well, we do not take advantage of opportunities and concede goals easily. We must improve quickly, otherwise it will be difficult to recover from these losses,” pointing to the need “for the injured to return.”
