Pennsylvania…extended polling stations after a technical malfunction

Kamala Harris, US Vice President, acknowledged defeat in the presidential elections against Donald Trump, pledging a peaceful transfer of power and cooperation with the president-elect.

Harris said in a speech to her supporters from Harrod University on Wednesday, “The result did not come as we had hoped, but we must accept it,” promising to “fight” for the issues she adopted in her campaign.

She added that she called President-elect Trump and congratulated him on his victory in the electoral race, which witnessed intense competition.

She assured Trump, “We will help him in the transition process and will participate in a peaceful transfer of power.”

“We will never give up the struggle for democracy and the rule of law,” Harris said, adding, “We owe allegiance not to a president or party but to the Constitution.”

Harris stated, “The result of this election is not what we wanted, it is not what we fought for, and it is not what we voted for, but listen to me when I say that the light of America’s promise will always burn bright as long as we never give up and as long as we continue to struggle.”

“While I acknowledge defeat in this election, I do not acknowledge defeat in the fight that fueled this campaign,” Harris told supporters at Howard University, a historically black university.

The crowd that Harris addressed included former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, White House aides and thousands of her supporters.

Harris pledged to continue fighting for women’s rights, against gun violence, and “to fight for the dignity that everyone deserves.”

The White House said in a statement that US Democratic President Joe Biden called Trump on Wednesday to congratulate him on his victory in the presidential elections and to invite him to meet at the White House.

Biden is scheduled to deliver a speech to the American people on Thursday. A White House statement confirmed that Biden also pledged to “ensure a smooth transition and stressed the importance of working to unify the country.”

Trump achieved a major victory in the 2024 US presidential elections, becoming the second president in the history of the United States of America to win two non-consecutive terms, after Grover Cleveland.

As of Wednesday, Trump won 292 electoral college votes, while Harris received 224 votes.

A presidential candidate needs at least 270 Electoral College votes to win the US presidential election.
