A foot and a half in a quarter: big wins for Liverpool and Roma

The round of 16 of the Europa League continues tonight (Thursday) with three preliminary games. Liverpool with 1:5 over Sparta Prague and Roma with 0:4 against Brighton, did the job and are a foot and a half away in the next stage. Bayer Leverkusen and Xavi Alonso survived their first loss of the season in all competitions with a 2:2 against Carabao.

Sparta Prague – Liverpool 5:1

The start of the game was relatively equal, but with a big difference in the final leg. While the Czechs often missed, Jurgen Klopp’s team was sharp in front of the goal and went into the break with a 3:0 lead from Darwin Nunez and a goal by Alexis McAllister in the penalty. Conor Bradley with an own goal further clinched, but Luis Dias and Dominic Soboslai closed the story for Herdes. 46th minute, a goal! Sparta Prague narrowed to 3:1: Conor Bradley just came on for Liverpool and was already in the wrong place when he tried to clear and kicked his own goal. The Czechs are back in business

90+4 minutes, a goal! Liverpool went up to a huge 1:5: Dominik Soboslai was honored with the last nail, just a moment before the end of the game. The Hungarian cruised unhindered all the way to the box and easily kicked in.

Rome – Brighton 0:4

In a match that was supposed to be one of the most intriguing and close of the phase, we got a one-sided show and a story that seemed closed already after the first game. De Zarby’s Brighton didn’t turn up for the game, so Daniela de Rossi’s side celebrated. Paulo Dybala and Romelu Lukaku scored even before halftime, Steven El Shaarawi’s pair of goals for Gianluca Mancini and Brian Cristante sealed a tremendous 0:4 for the Italians.

Karabakh – Bayer Leverkusen 2:2

Precisely in a game that should have been one-sided, we got the biggest drama. Xavi Alonso’s team safely leads the German league this season and thought they would travel, but the leader of the Azeri league had other plans. Karabakh had already taken a 0:2 lead, but late goals by Florian Wirtz and Patrik Schick prevented Leverkusen’s first loss of the season in all competitions.
