In the Invalides, in the heart of the seventh arrondissement of Paris, between the Eiffel Tower and the avenue of museums, a Canadian athlete bounces tennis balls with her hands and the Israeli team boasts: “It’s a warm-up trend that we started with.” In the quiet and nice atmosphere, the Israeli archer Michaela Moshe landed the arrows on target number 25 today (Thursday).

The first Israeli woman to compete in archery set a new personal and national record at the Paris 2024 Olympics, already in the preliminary round. There is no doubt that the 20-year-old athlete from Ramat Hasharon came to try and surprise.

And she did all this with terrible pain in her shoulder due to an injury. Michaela is an athlete with a special story, one who broke into the world top in archery within two years – even though she had never competed in it before but came from artistic gymnastics. In 2019, she was even a substitute gymnast in the Tokyo 2020 team for one year and also later served as a second substitute in the B team.

Although Moshe made a quick and impressive transition from a gymnast to an athlete, her body still did not adapt to such a sharp transition and therefore she tore ligaments in her shoulder. Michaela will have to undergo shoulder surgery to reconstruct the ligaments and this will happen after the Paris Olympics.

“How did I make this transition? It was simple,” she said Michaela Moshe. “It’s the same work ethic. The same repetitions of the same exercises and the same amount of work hours. If in artistic gymnastics I trained for ten hours in the hall, then here it is the same. From seven in the morning until five in the evening I just train, simply in a different branch that requires me to learn other things, but there is no doubt that I develop over time. And yes, it’s a bit strange, but I’m among the best in the world if I got here.”
