Mahmoud Saleh was born on August 16, 1960 in Bulaq Abu El-Ela district in Cairo. He was one of the most famous defenders in the history of the Red Castle in the eighties and early nineties.
He started his football career with the Al-Ahly youth team and was promoted to the first team. He played his first match on March 7, 1982 against Al-Mansoura, and Al-Ahly won by three goals to none. He then joined the Egyptian national team in 1985.
Saleh won the league championship with Al-Ahly 5 times from 1982 to 1988, as well as the Egypt Cup title with the Red Devils 6 times from 1983 to 1992.
In African championships, Mahmoud Saleh had a share with Al-Ahly and won five championships: the League Champions Championship in 1982 and 1987, and the African Cup Winners’ Cup in 1984, 1985, and 1986.
Mahmoud Saleh retired from football in 1992 after Al-Ahly decided not to register him along with Taher Abu Zeid and Alaa Mihoub. He worked as a coach in Al-Ahly’s youth sector until he assumed the position of general coach for the Petrojet team and then the Enppi team.
