All or nothing – zero expectations, one hundred percent pleasure (film review)

The Bad Guys series is one of those movie series that is not too clear how they survived for so long. The first film was a reasonable action film that does not stand the test of time, I saw the second film as a child and I remember it as a significant decrease in the not-so-great quality of the first, and the third was also very reasonable.

This film series is mostly known as the one that introduced the world to Michael Bay (whether that’s good or bad is up to you). So not only was I not excited about the new film in the series, “Bad Guys: All or Nothing“, but I really expected to be disappointed by it and watch it knowing that it would probably be a cringe-watching movie.

How happy I was to find out that I was wrong, and how much fun it was to watch “All or Nothing”.

Bad Guys: All or Nothing – the plot

“Bad Guys: All or Nothing” continues the plots of the coolest drug detectives in Miami – Mike Lowery (Will Smith’) and Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence).

This time they need to clear the name of their late beloved captain from allegations that he was involved in dealings with cartels during his service.

The journey to prove his innocence puts Mike and Marcus to the test, as they themselves become hunted by the authorities and have to prove not only the captain’s innocence, but also their own.

Fourth time Skittles

Will Smith and Martin Lawrence have been playing Mike and Marcus for almost 30 years, and although there is not much uniformity between the times when the films were released – 8 years between the first and second films, 17 years between the second and third, and only 4 years between the third and fourth – it feels as if Lawrence And Smith lived three decades as the characters and maybe in some place they themselves are the characters.

Like them, they have also improved over the years. Their chemistry is heavenly in “All or Nothing”, and it’s something that’s just fun to watch, especially when it comes to two men approaching 60 years old and still proving that they can learn new tricks.

Unlike the previous films in the series, “All or Nothing” somewhat switches between the personalities of the characters we are used to from the characters previously played by Smith and Lawrence.

Not only does Marcus feel like the more “rational” character of the two police officers because of a medical incident at the beginning of the film that gives him a new perspective on life, but he feels as if Lawrence himself is the big star in the current film, as Smith could probably have been replaced by quite a few other actors in a way that was not Changes the dynamic between the characters too much.

It’s not something that hinders viewing, maybe even enhances it, especially when it comes to Smith’s first major film since the events of the Oscars in 2022, which turned him from a superstar to a somewhat controversial figure.

Michael Bay’s ghost hovers over the film

The Bad Guys series introduced Michael Bay to the world – the director who has already become a household name in every movie where lots of things explode and the explosions are as big as possible.

Well, the current film was directed by the duo Adeel Al-Arabi and Bilal Falah, who already directed the third film in the series. If in “Bad Guys Forever” it seemed as if Adil and Bilal were mainly trying to imitate Michael Bay, in “All or Nothing” they take a step back from what Bay did and three forwards, to make the film a work that is entirely their own.

True, the spirit of Michael Bay still hovers over the franchise (in more ways than you think) and yes, there are big, stupid explosions that revolve around the characters in dramatic slow motion, but “All or Nothing” is totally Adil and Bilal’s movie and is probably one of the action movies with The most accurate action I’ve seen recently.

Great shots filmed with a drone (probably), dynamic movements and the feeling that the action in the film does not stop, and even as a viewer I did not want it to stop because it was simply spectacular, successful and makes me want to see what other heights Adil and Bilal can reach.

A simple plot is not a bad thing

There is no doubt that the weakest point of the film is its plot, but that is not because it is bad, but because it is very simple.

However, the film cushions the viewers with so much good action, with good chemistry between the main characters, and in one of the most unexpected scenes for those who follow the franchise, which caused quite a few calls of “dammmmm” in the audience.

There are still quite a few good and entertaining surprises in the film, and I think that even though the plot of the film feels like I’ve seen it somewhere before, it didn’t really detract from my experience as a viewer.

I didn’t come to “Bad Boys” to see a movie that would leave me with some insight into life or some deep thought. The main requirement of “all or nothing” is “take your head off and come have fun”, and I did enjoy it. In fact, I enjoyed it so much that I didn’t even feel like two hours of a movie had passed when it was over – which is no small thing with today’s movies.

Bottom line – what did we think of “Bad Guys: All or Nothing”?

The summer period is usually characterized by fun and explosive movies, and after this year we received quite a few such movies (“The Double” and “Kong and Godzilla” are particularly memorable to me), “All or Nothing” comes and increases all this fun many times over.

Not only did my early expectations about it not come true, I even left with a smile, because “Bad Guys: All or Nothing” is simply a never-ending roller coaster of action and humor, and a summer movie doesn’t need more than that.
