Arsenal overcame the obstacle against Manchester United, but still do not depend on themselves

Ahead of the final games of the season, Arsenal marked May 12 as the last real obstacle that could prevent them from winning the championship. The Gunners met this obstacle tonight (Sunday), beating Manchester United 0:1 away and returning at least temporarily to the top of the Premier League. Mikel Arteta’s team has 87 points with one game to go in the season, while City are second with 85 points but have two games left. Therefore the reigning champion depends on herself, but in any case the race will only be decided in the final round on the next first.

Just like Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool were record breaking and still finishing behind Pep Guardiola’s team, this may be Arsenal’s fate as well. The Gunners recorded 27 wins this season in the league, their most ever in the Premier League. Even in the “undefeated” season of 2004 – Arsenal’s last championship season – fewer victories were achieved.

Andrew Trussar scored the only goal of the game in the 20th minute, and the defense made sure to keep a clean sheet until the end. It was the 11th time that Arsenal have kept a clean sheet away from home this season in the league, but unfortunately they will not be able to beat the record that belongs to Chelsea with 12 clean sheets in 2009. By the way, the precedent that may worry Arsenal is that the same record was not enough for the Blues to win the championship.

Manchester United, on the other hand, continues in the low season and may end the season without a ticket to Europe. If they finish in eighth place where they are now, only a win over Manchester City in the cup final will secure them a place in a European plant next season. This was the Red Devils’ ninth loss of the season at Old Trafford in all competitions. In doing so, they tied the third all-time record set five times previously – most recently 50 years ago.

Manchester City didn’t get any help from their city rivals, and Arsenal are hoping that’s exactly what will happen this Tuesday. The Citizens will be hosted by Tottenham, Arsenal’s city rivals who have made it very difficult for Pep Guardiola in recent years. All victory and the championship will come closer to Manchester again. A draw or less, and Arsenal will need a win over Everton in the final round to win the title for the first time in two decades.
