The former soccer player Liron Bess was brought today (Monday) to a court hearing regarding the extension of his detention in the shadow of the suspicions against him of fraud worth 26,000,000 euros. He arrived at the court in Moscow after he was arrested by order of Interpol at the request of Germany, and there his detention was extended for another 40 days.
A base came to Russia from Georgia. According to the Dresden prosecutor’s office, Bess is accused of 33 different counts of fraud in the amount of 26 million euros. The former footballer was suspected of “allegedly being part of a gang of fraudsters”. In the Russian court they argued: “The investigation that required his arrest was justified, he is suspected of fraud on a huge scale and is on Germany’s wanted list.”
At the hearing, the 50-year-old Basis said: “It’s not like that, I’m not guilty of anything.” Basis even complained that he was not given kosher food in the Russian detention center before the trial. Because of this, he was forced to eat only black bread and drink tea. In Russia it was reported that in the future a base may be handed over to Germany.
The former midfielder grew up in Maccabi Haifa, but is best known for his time in Hapoel Haifa, where he took part in the historic championship season in 1989/99 alongside Eli Gutman. He later also played for Hapoel BS, Maccabi Tel Aviv and Beitar Jerusalem.
Basis returned to the Reds from Carmel to promote them to the Premier League in the 2002/03 season, but the team failed in the mission and he left. He played at Maccabi Petah Tikva and Maccabi Netanya before retiring in 2008 with Maccabi Amishab, with whom he was promoted to the First League.
He was part of Israel’s youth team and has two goals in six games in the national uniform. He was married to event producer Irit Rahamim and the two divorced in 2012, with two children together.
