Artists from Bolivia and Argentina gathered in a desert area in the Bolivian Andes to revive the Passion of Christ and images from the Old Testament of the Bible, in celebration of the 24th edition of the Sand Sculpture Festival in the sands of the city of Cuciraya, about 118 miles south of the capital, La Paz, before celebrating Eid al-Fitr. More than 250 artists joined this tradition of Holy Week-related art in the sandy areas of Kuchiraya, northwest of Oruro. This activity is carried out for another year.
Since the celebration of Good Friday, national and international artists have arrived on the sandy shores of Kucheraya to capture images of Jesus Christ and other symbols of Holy Week. They have captured at least 24 images on the sandbanks depicting the life, passion and resurrection of Jesus Christ. “In the sandy areas of Kushiraya, national and international artists begin creating sand sculptures that will be displayed to visitors who come to this sector on Good Friday,” they wrote from the Oruro Mayor’s Office on their social networks.
“Unusual sand sculptures are displayed on the sandbanks of Kuchiraya on Good Friday, with visiting families enjoying artworks made by Bolivian and overseas artists,” the autonomous municipal government of Oruro said.
This activity, in addition to evoking the Catholic faith, also presents a message in favor of the environment, reminding visitors of the importance of caring for these spaces of natural beauty.
It is worth noting that since 2004, sculptures referring to Holy Week have been made on the slopes of sandy beaches. For this reason, this has become one of the favorite destinations for Bolivian families at this time.
