Barcelona president Joan Laporta has decided once and for all to dismiss Xavi Hernandez, the coach of the Catalan team, and an official announcement will be made within the next few days.
Xavi had announced that the current season would be his last in Barcelona, before he held a meeting with Laporta, and it was agreed on April 24 that he would continue in his position, but it seems that this agreement has ended.
“Network revealed”Radio Catalonia“, that Laporta decided to oust the Spanish coach, due to the overwhelming anger within the board of directors regarding Xavi’s recent statements, during which he stressed that the club’s economic situation makes it difficult to compete with the major clubs for championships next season.
The network indicated that the decision will be official after facing Rayo Vallecano in La Liga (next Sunday), so as not to affect the team’s guarantee of second place, and Laporta made it following Xavi’s press conference before facing Almeria.
Xavi commented on this news, after the Almeria match, saying: “I said what I think. The economic situation is not the best, but we will still aspire to the maximum. I look forward to winning titles next season.”
She explained: “Laporta did not like Xavi’s statements, in which he stated that it would be very difficult to compete with Real Madrid and other European clubs, due to the economic difficulties that the club is going through. So (the Barcelona president) decided not to travel with the team delegation to Almeria.”
Marca had reported that despite the frustration with Xavi’s press conference, there would be no action, and the coach had said the same thing, but they did not mention that Laporta was considering sacking as well.
