The Fana Radio and Television Corporation quoted an administrative official in Afar as saying that the authorities evacuated residents from the affected area, which is about 165 kilometers from the capital, Addis Ababa.
Shivraw Teklemariam, Commissioner of the Ethiopian Disaster Risk Management Committee, said that it is too early to describe this activity as a volcanic eruption, but the authorities will not risk the population.
He added: “Some residents are already leaving those areas, and we are also preparing to do this in a very organized way, and this (relocating residents) will be done based on expectations.”
The region, which is witnessing volcanic activity, has also been vulnerable to earthquakes and earthquakes in the past few months.
