German international Toni Kroos, Real Madrid’s Spanish midfielder, decided on Tuesday to retire from football at the end of the season, after concluding his participation with his country’s national team in the European Nations Cup, “Euro 2024.”
Kroos (34 years old) said in a statement posted on his Instagram account: “July 17, 2014 – the day I was introduced to Real Madrid, the day that changed my life (..) It was the beginning of a new chapter in the biggest club in the world.”
He continued: “After 10 years at the end of the season, this chapter ends. I will never forget that hugely successful time and I would especially like to thank everyone who welcomed me with an open heart and trusted me, but especially I would like to thank you, dear madridistas, for your affection and love since… The first day until the last day.
Kroos added: “At the same time, this decision means that my career as a football player will end this summer after the Euro Championship.”
He continued, saying: “As I have always said: Real Madrid is my last team and will remain so. I am happy and proud, because I found in my mind the appropriate timing for my decision, and that I can choose it myself.”
He concluded: “My ambition has always been to end my career at the top, and together towards the 15th Hala Madrid.”
For his part, Real Madrid said in a statement: “Toni Kroos has decided to end his career as a professional football player after the 2024 European Championship.”
He continued: “Real Madrid wants to express its gratitude and love for Toni Kroos, a player who has already become part of Real Madrid’s history and one of the great legends of our club and world football.”
He explained: “Toni Kroos arrived at our club in 2014, and he was a key player in one of the most successful periods in Real Madrid’s 122-year history.”
The Spanish club was trying to convince the player to renew his contract, which expires at the end of the season, but Kroos surprised everyone with his decision to retire.
Over the course of the ten seasons in which he wore the Real Madrid shirt, Kroos has won 22 titles in 463 matches so far, including 4 European Cups, 5 Club World Cups, 4 European Super Cups, 4 Leagues, 1 King’s Cup and 4 Spanish Super Cups. He also won the “Manschaft” Cup. World 2014 in Brazil.
