Petar Vasiliević, former sporting director of the Spanish club Osasuna, confirmed during statements to the “No. 10” program with journalist Karim Ramzy on Channel One, that the success of a sporting director is linked to understanding the policy of the club he works for and knowing its history before assuming the position.
He pointed out that the club’s plan specifies the powers of the sports director to avoid conflicting with the wishes of the technical director, explaining that some clubs grant the technical director some powers in contracts without allowing him to fully control matters.
He added that unifying playing methods between youth teams and academies has become an important goal for most clubs, as they seek to bring similar playing methods between the teams of one club to ensure that young players adapt to the first team, especially if the club relies on members of the youth sector.
He stressed that the technical director must adapt to the club’s policy and work within its framework, indicating that success cannot be completely guaranteed, but good preparation forms the basis for achieving goals.
Vasilievich explained that sports work in Spain has witnessed major changes, citing his experience with Osasuna in 2010, where few employees spoke Spanish, while the current situation requires proficiency in foreign languages, noting that a successful sports director must be familiar with at least four languages. In addition to obtaining training courses to hone his skills and organize his work.
He stressed that the sports director must start from scratch and work to qualify himself for at least four years to achieve success in the transfer market.
Regarding the possibility of working in the Egyptian League, Vasilievich said that making the decision depends on studying the club’s policy, its goals, and its future outlook, pointing out the importance of examining many factors before accepting any offer to work in Egypt.
