President-elect Donald Trump has settled on Senator Marco Rubio of Florida as secretary of state, according to people familiar with the matter, as Trump moves quickly to build out his foreign policy and national security team.
The new foreign minister took hard-line stances on China and Iran
According to the New York Times website, the Florida senator, who has taken hard-line positions on China, Iran and Venezuela, will be the country’s highest-ranking diplomat.
Rubio was elected to the Senate in 2010, and has defined his position as a foreign policy hawk, taking tough positions on China, Iran, Venezuela, and Cuba in particular.
His position on the Russian military operation in Ukraine
Marco Rubio also recently reiterated Trump’s position on issues such as Russia’s operation against Ukraine, saying the conflict has reached a stalemate and must reach a conclusion.
Despite his tough talk on Russia in the past, Rubio is likely to agree with Trump’s expected plans to pressure Ukraine to find a way to reach a settlement with Russia and stay out of NATO.
It is unclear whether the leaders of Ukraine or Russia are willing to enter into talks based on Trump’s proposals.

Rubio was among the most outspoken senators about the need for the United States to be more aggressive toward China, and he adopted positions that later became more widespread in both parties.
While serving in Congress during the first Trump administration, he began advocating for industrial policy aimed at helping the United States better compete with China’s state-directed economy.
