Donald Trump became the first former US president to be convicted of criminal offenses after a New York jury found him guilty of all 34 counts related to a scheme to illegally influence the 2016 election by paying hush money to a porn star who said the two had sex together.
Charges of falsifying business records carry a penalty of up to four years behind bars, but Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg would not say Thursday whether prosecutors intended to seek prison time.
However, this sentence can be commuted if the convict does not have a criminal record, which applies to Trump, who will be 78 years old when his sentence is pronounced.

The conviction of former US President Donald Trump on 34 criminal charges by a jury in New York represented a historic turning point. Jurors said Thursday they unanimously agreed that Trump falsified business records to hide a $130,000 payment to porn star Stormy Daniels to influence the outcome of the 2016 election.
Michael Cohen, a Trump aide at the time, testified that Trump agreed to pay $130,000 to buy Daniels’ silence in the final weeks before the 2016 election, when he faced multiple accusations of sexual misconduct.
Forgery of business documents is usually classified as a misdemeanor in New York, but prosecutors in the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office upgraded it to a felony on the grounds that Trump was concealing an illegal campaign contribution.
The case included 11 charges related to invoices for legal services and similar checks paid for legal services, and 12 charges of recording expenses in accounting records for legal expenses.
