A 1-1 draw was decided at the top of the twenty-eighth round of the English Football League between Liverpool and its guest, champion Manchester City, on Sunday, and Arsenal was the biggest beneficiary of remaining in the lead by goal difference from the first, and a point from the second.
Liverpool raised its score to 64 points, and fell to second place on goal difference behind Arsenal, which temporarily took the lead on Saturday, by defeating Brentford 2-1 on Saturday, while Man City fell to third place, with 63 points.
Liverpool, burdened by injuries, started better in most of the match they hosted at Anfield, especially during the second half, as they were close to inflicting the first loss on the European champion after twenty matches on more than one occasion.
The Reds thought they had opened the scoring through Colombian Luis Dias, but his goal was not counted because of offside on Uruguayan passer Darwin Nunes (19).
Centre-back John Stones scored City’s first goal after following a ball from a corner kick executed by Belgian Kevin De Bruyne, exploiting a cover error by Nunes and Dutchman Virgil van Dijk (23).
Hungarian Dominik Soboslai missed an easy opportunity to equalize the score after Harry Elliott played him a perfect cross, but he headed the ball to the side of the left post (31).
Norwegian Erling Haaland tried to score the second for the visitors after starting from around the middle of the field, but his shot came easily into the hands of Irish goalkeeper Caomen Kelleher (39).
Dias responded with a powerful shot to the right side of Brazilian goalkeeper Ederson (41).
Liverpool entered strongly in the second half and won a penalty kick after Ederson committed a foul against Nunes, who tried to cut off an errant pass from Dutch defender Nathan Ake to his Brazilian international goalkeeper (47), so Argentine international Alexis McAllister successfully scored it to the left of Ederson, scoring his third goal in the season. Ederson was injured after colliding with Nunes after causing the penalty kick, so he left his place to German Stefan Ortega (56).
Liverpool’s German coach, Jurgen Klopp, brought in Scottish left-back Andrew Robertson and his Egyptian top scorer, Mohamed Salah (61), and the latter passed the ball “on a silver platter” to the lone Dias, but he shot wide of his goal (62).

City’s Spanish coach Pep Guardiola included Croatian Matteo Kovacic and Belgian Jeremy Doku to activate the midfield and attack, but Liverpool continued to press and almost scored again through Nunes, but the German goalkeeper got out of his goal and blocked his shot (71).
Phil Foden almost added the second for City when goalkeeper Kelleher came out to him and blocked a cross from Ake that hit Foden and bounced off the crossbar (74).
Ortega continued to shine by blocking a shot from advanced young defender Jarel Quansah (80).
Liverpool almost lost everything with a shot from Doku on the right side that bounced off the left post to Kelleher (89).
