According to the same source, the First Vice President will assume presidential duties and will not be named president before the elections.

He added that a committee will be formed from the First Vice President, the Speaker of Parliament, and the head of the judiciary to manage the country and hold elections within 50 days, noting that the elected president will assume his duties for the next 4 years.

Articles of the Constitution

The Iranian Constitution clarifies the method of dealing with any emergency resulting from the vacancy of the presidential position in the country, as it stipulates in its Article 131 that the First Vice President of the Republic shall assume the duties of the President of the Republic, and shall enjoy his powers with the approval of the Supreme Leader of the Republic.

A council consisting of the First Vice President of the Republic, the Speaker of Parliament, and the head of the judiciary shall arrange the election of a new president within a maximum period of 50 days.

It is also stated in Article 132 of the Constitution that during the period in which the First Vice President of the Republic assumes his responsibilities, ministers cannot be questioned or no confidence can be withheld from them, and it is also not possible to review the Constitution or issue an order to hold a general referendum in the country.

Emergency session

This comes as the Iranian Cabinet held a second emergency session, within less than 24 hours of confirming the death of President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian in a helicopter crash.

The Iranian First Vice President, Mohammad Mokhber, had already chaired an emergency meeting held yesterday evening, Sunday, after the disappearance of the helicopter carrying 9 people on board in northwestern Iran.

Earlier today, the Iranian government confirmed in a statement on Monday that it would continue to work without “the slightest glitch” after the death of President Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash on Sunday.

The government statement said, “The government assures the loyal, appreciative, and dear Iranian people that the path of pride and service will continue, and thanks to the spirit of the Ayatollah, my president, the hero, the servant of the people, and the loyal friend of the tireless leadership (…) there will not be the slightest defect or problem in the jihadi administration of the country.”
