Morocco announces the allocation of one million hectares to “green hydrogen”

The Moroccan government announced, on Monday, the identification of important public real estate, with an area of ​​approximately one million hectares (about 10,000 square kilometers), within the framework of activating the “Morocco Offer” in order to develop green hydrogen projects, “and make the Kingdom a competitive player in this sector.”

The statement published by the official news agency added, “The state has identified important public real estate with an area of ​​approximately one million hectares. During the first phase, 300,000 hectares will be provided for the benefit of investors, and will be distributed on plots of land ranging in size from ten thousand to 30,000 hectares, according to the size of the anticipated projects.” .

He stressed that the state “targets investors or groups of investors wishing to produce green hydrogen and its derivatives, whether it is intended for the internal market, export, or both together.”

He pointed out that nearly 100 national and international investors have expressed their interest in producing green hydrogen in Morocco.

The statement expected that “green hydrogen will be a primary source of energy, and one of the main catalysts for the energy transition and sustainable growth in the Kingdom,” considering that “this emerging sector will constitute a turning point for the Moroccan economy in light of the economic, social, environmental, and technological challenges that surround it.”

He explained that the “Morocco offer” applies to integrated projects ranging from generating electricity from renewable energies and electrolysis, to converting green hydrogen into ammonia, methanol and synthetic fuels, as well as related logistics services.
