The most significant “Judgment Day” punishment that the “Otzma Yehudit” faction can impose on a MK Almog Cohen There could be a request to declare him as a retiring Knesset member, a move that would deprive him of many parliamentary rights as well as running in the next elections in an existing party such as switching to Likud.
However, the Otzma Yehudit faction estimates that the coalition will not allow them to declare Almog Cohen as a “retiring Knesset member” and therefore there is currently no intention to start the legal process in the Knesset committee.
Since the chairman of the Knesset committee is the chairman of the coalition MK Ofir Katz, Otzma Yehudit understands that he and the coalition have no interest in granting Ben Gabir this achievement, and the members of the committee can prevent this punishment Almog Cohen. Meanwhile, the Otzma Yehudit faction intends to immediately deny Almog Cohen his quotas on behalf of the faction such as bills or speaking times.
Last week, as I recall, Cohen violated factional discipline and chose to support the coalition’s legislation, thus going against the minister’s position Itamar Ben Gabir. Yesterday, Cohen was removed from the party’s WhatsApp groups and he will not be invited to faction meetings.
At the beginning of the week, after he was not invited to a meeting with Minister Ben Gabir, MK Cohen’s associates told Maariv: “After the apology, we were sure that the mistake they made last week would not be repeated. Almog is not made of sugar and is not moved by boycotts, will continue to engage in the stability that our soldiers need.”
Currently, Cohen is a member of only one committee – the Labor and Welfare Committee – and the faction can announce that he is no longer a member on its behalf, as they did about a year and a half ago when they removed him from the Foreign Affairs and Security Committee as an unheard of punishment for party discipline in the May 2023 votes.
