Pakistan International Airlines is preparing to resume direct flights to European countries early next month, officials said Thursday, days after the European Union Aviation Safety Agency lifted a ban on PIA flights to Europe to comply with its safety standards.

The Aviation Safety Agency had imposed the ban on Pakistan International Airlines since 2020 after 97 people were killed when a plane belonging to the company crashed in Karachi, the capital of Sindh province in southern Pakistan.

Officials said that the ban resulted in the company incurring losses estimated at about $150 million annually.

Company spokesman Abdullah Hafeez said that after more than four years, the first direct flight from the capital, Islamabad, to Paris will resume at the beginning of next January.

He told the Associated Press that the European Aviation Safety Agency expressed its “full satisfaction with the company’s safety standards,” explaining that arrangements are being made to resume PIA’s flights to other countries in the European Union.
