Palisades Fire burns in Mandeville Canyon, evacuations ordered

Evacuation orders for the Mandeville Canyon area in Brentwood are in place and evacuation warnings issued for Sunset Blvd to Mulholland Drive to the North.

BRENTWOOD, Calif. — As the Palisades Fire made its way into Brentwood, fire crews are watching West Ridge Trail in Mandeville Canyon for any embers that may flare up.

Around 37,000 firefighters from all over the country were protecting structures. Hand crews went into backyards while firefighting aircraft dropped water on flames from above.

The steep, rugged terrain made it difficult for firefighters to get to, that’s why air support has been so important in this firefight. Aircraft have been dropping water strategically to keep the flames from spreading. They’re getting water from the Encino Reservoir and have been able to make a fire line for crews on the ground.

“Hand crews are making their way up the canyon, trying to put in perimeter lines to keep the fire from spreading,” Adam VanGerpen, a captain with the LA City Fire Department, said.

Most of the Brentwood Hills neighborhood evacuated their homes, but one homeowner who did not leave when evacuation orders came said he didn’t sleep all night.

“This is my house. I live here, this was my parents’ home. My parents bought this place here in 1968,” Mark, who didn’t want to reveal his last name, said.

As the winds died down and shifted, Mark took his chances.

“I was ready to evacuate every day it got dangerous. Then I walked up the hill here and looked at the situation and the firefighters were able to get a handle on it,” Mark said.

According to VanGerpen, firefighters were able to keep the fire out of the homes in the area because of lack of wind on Saturday,

Hundreds of embers could be seen in the canyon after sunset. As the Red Flag Warning continues, fire crews will continue to fight throughout the night.
