Softball Offense Shows Promise in Game 2, But Redhawks Overpower Softball 14-4 in 6 Innings

MOREHEAD, Ky. —The Morehead State Eagles struggled on Sunday, falling to the Southeast Missouri State Redhawks by final score of 14-4.

Sophomore Jessie Begley (5-7) got the ball to start for Morehead State (10-20, 4-13) and took the loss.

In the batter’s box, the Eagles were led by junior Darlene Montoyawho went 1-for-2 on the day with a double and two RBI. Junior Ilencia Lightbody furnished a noteworthy performance at the dish as well, going 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Senior Peyton Jordan also helped out for Morehead State, putting together two hits in two trips to the plate while adding a walk.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Things started well for the hosts. Trailing 1-0, MSU answered with a pair in the bottom of the frame. Darlene Montoya and Ilencia Lightbody both had hits, with Montoya’s coming off a run-scoring double that plated Jordan. Lightbody followed with a single that scored Montoya.

The Eagles lost the lead they built in the first after the Redhawks scored eight in the second and then one in the third, but got back on the board in the third after scoring a pair of runs, with one run driven in by sophomore Taikibrea Campbell’s single and the other on a Montoya sacrifice fly, which tightened the Redhawks lead to 10-4. Lightbody had a double, Samantha Cervantes had a walk and Peyton Jordan had a single and a stolen base, Jordan and Lightbody each scored.

MSU had a chance to cut into the deficit in the fourth after Pickford interrupted doubled and Jordan singled, but the inning ended with a double play.

The Eagles were unable to get any closer, as Southeast Missouri State added four runs to their tally on the way to a 14-4 final.

SEMO closed out the game by scoring four runs in the sixth, forcing the game’s early end.

The Redshawks finished with 14 hits, while the Eagles had eight. Six different MSU players had hits, including two each for Jordan and Lightbody. Pickford, Campbell, Montoya and freshman Kendra Lewis each added one. Jordan scored twice, LIghtbody and Montoya each scored once. Montoya collected two RBI, with Campbell and Lightbody each added one.

Paige Halliwell finished 4-for-4, with three RBI and three runs scored. Kynzie Wrighley was 2-for-3, with two RBI and two runs scored. Eight different Redhawks picked up hits.

Tean Livesay got the start and went 2.2 innings, allowing four runs (all earned) on six hits, with two strikeouts and two walks. Delaney Kell picked up the win after 3.1 innings of scoreless work, allowing just two hits, while striking out one and walking none.

Begley went 1.1 innings, surrendering six runs (all earned) on six hits. She finished with two walks and no strikeouts. Freshman Addie Stem pitched 4.2 innings in relief, with eight runs (just five earned) on eight hits, with three strikeouts and three walks.

Southeast Missouri has now won 11 straight against the Eagles and the last four in Morehead.
