The detention of Liron Basis was extended last night by 40 days in Russia after a hearing in the Moscow court. The former Israeli soccer player is suspected of an alleged fraud in the amount of 26 million Euros, while the media in Russia claim that he will be detained at least until July 7, and later there is a chance that he will be extradited to Germany, which initially requested his arrest.
According to the suspicion, Basis was allegedly involved in cyber frauds that lasted for about six years, starting in 2018, and allegedly provided him and his people with a large fortune: “Basis and other suspects bought addresses in Tbilisi, Georgia, held key positions, influenced employees from marketing departments throughout Europe and tried to sell They have economic products,” it was written in Russia.
“They used the payments of those people to trade inside information and the same money to make a fortune. The center of the talks was in Georgia, and a number of German businessmen were injured,” they added in Russia.
It was also claimed in the Russian media that the prosecutor’s office in Dresden, Germany, applied to request Basis’s arrest, and two days later he was arrested. The prosecutor’s office initially conducted an investigation against Basis on charges of ordinary fraud, before the development of cybercrimes.
At the hearing, the 50-year-old Basis said: “It’s not like that, I’m not guilty of anything.” Basis even complained that he was not given kosher food in the Russian detention center before the trial. Because of this, he was forced to eat only black bread and drink tea. In Russia it was reported that in the future a base may be handed over to Germany.
The former midfielder grew up in Maccabi Haifa, but is best known for his time in Hapoel Haifa, where he took part in the historic championship season in 1989/99 alongside Eli Gutman. He later also played for Hapoel BS, Maccabi Tel Aviv and Beitar Jerusalem.
Basis returned to the Reds from Carmel to promote them to the Premier League in the 2002/03 season, but the team failed in the mission and he left. He played at Maccabi Petah Tikva and Maccabi Netanya before retiring in 2008 with Maccabi Amishab, with whom he was promoted to the First League.
He was part of Israel’s youth team and has two goals in six games in the national uniform. He was married to event producer Irit Rahamim and the two divorced in 2012, with two children together.
