The author of the “dirty” drawing about Ramadan in Gaza seeks help from threats

French cartoonist Coco, a survivor of the attack on the satirical magazine “Charlie Hebdo” in Paris in 2015, denounced on Tuesday violent attacks against her, including insults and death threats, since she published on Monday in the newspaper “Liberation” a cartoon about famine in Gaza.

The drawing, titled “Ramadan in Gaza,” with the caption “The beginning of the month of fasting” next to it, shows a skinny man from Gaza running after mice, while a woman hits his hand, saying, “Not before sunset,” among rubble, among which appears a hand belonging to a corpse.

On Tuesday, Coco announced on the “X” platform that the aforementioned drawing “shows the despair of the Palestinians, and condemns the famine in Gaza,” which is being subjected to heavy Israeli bombing, and where the United Nations fears a widespread famine. Coco pointed out that the drawing “also mocks the absurdity of religion.”

Coco posted a “small sample” of death threats targeting her and her family, in addition to anti-Semitic messages she has received since the cartoon was published.

Representative Sofia Chiquero from the “France Proud” party (radical left) commented on the drawing, saying, “You will not receive our hatred, but you deserve it.”

Another member of the “Proud France” party, Sarah LeGrand, said in a comment on the same platform that the drawing was “simply dirty.”

One commenter on AX wrote in English, “Run, run, bitch… You will be shot soon. The whole family is dead.”

Another said, “They should have liquidated you on January 7,” referring to the attack in which Charlie Hebdo cartoonists were killed in 2015.

The painter, who joined Liberation in 2021 and lives under strict protection, received the support of the leftist daily newspaper.

Dov Alfon, editor-in-chief of the Liberation newspaper, told AFP, “We strongly condemn and denounce this wave of threats, insults and intimidation, which includes death threats, which we take very seriously,” announcing the publication of a statement of “support and solidarity” in Wednesday’s issue.

Alfon stressed that “this violence should not be underestimated.”

National Secretary of the French Communist Party, Fabien Roussel, also offered his “full support” to Coco on the X platform. “Forever by your side, and by Charlie’s side,” he said.
