Under the generous patronage of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, celebration activities for World Arabic Language Day were held, organized by the Educational Center for the Arabic Language for the Gulf States in Sharjah at its headquarters on Tuesday morning, in cooperation with the Ministry of Education.
The organization of the annual celebration came in response to the directives of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the International Plan for the Development of Arab Culture (Arabia), and within the framework of the aspirations of the wise leaders towards organizing a celebration on the occasion of the International Day of the Arabic Language, in a manner befitting the status of the Arabic language and its cultural connotations.
The celebration activities began with the recitation of the National Anthem of the United Arab Emirates, then the recitation of verses from the Holy Qur’an, followed by a speech by His Excellency Dr. Issa Saleh Al Hammadi, Director of the Educational Center for the Arabic Language for the Gulf States, who welcomed the attendees and praised the efforts of the wise Gulf leaderships in strengthening and protecting the status of the Arabic language. Which was embodied in the establishment of the Educational Center for the Arabic Language for the Gulf States in Sharjah in response to their sound directives.
Al Hammadi also praised the efforts of the United Arab Emirates and the Emirate of Sharjah in particular in the pioneering initiatives aimed at preserving and advancing the Arabic language.
Al Hammadi spoke about the UAE’s efforts to sponsor Arabic language initiatives, saying: “On this day, we stand before the UAE’s pioneering and distinguished efforts to advance the Arabic language, through a package of qualitative initiatives aimed at preserving the Arabic language, through which the UAE has taken the lead.” A prominent position at the forefront of countries within the framework of efforts aimed at restoring the prestige of the Arabic language and its historical position in the field of science, knowledge and cultural communication.”
Al Hammadi added that the contributions of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah in serving the Arabic language cannot be overlooked, pointing to many institutions that His Highness established to protect it, in addition to the Historical Dictionary of the Arabic Language project.
Al-Hammadi also announced the center’s new publications for the year 2024, which aim to develop international and regional tests for the Arabic language, which aim to determine the level of students in various language skills such as listening, speaking, reading, and writing, as well as in the language sciences of grammar, morphology, and rhetoric. These tests are to improve teaching and learning in the Arabic language and develop its curricula in line with contemporary developments.
Following Al Hammadi’s speech, the audience watched a visual presentation prepared by the Educational Center for the Arabic Language for the Gulf States, which reviewed the Center’s achievements during the current session of conferences, training programs, research and studies, in addition to student competitions in poetry, stories and novels.
The celebration program included a speech from His Excellency Dr. Abdul Aziz Abdul Rahman Al Muslim, President of the Sharjah Heritage Institute, who stressed in his speech the importance of preserving the Arab cultural heritage and developing it in line with contemporary developments. He also stressed the need to enhance cultural awareness of the Arabic language and its role in documenting Arab identity.
In his speech, His Excellency Dr. Muhammad Safi Al Mosteghanemi, Secretary General of the Arabic Language Academy in Sharjah, spoke about the importance of the Arabic language in transmitting science, knowledge and culture, pointing to the Academy’s efforts to preserve the integrity of the language and develop it in various fields. He added that the Academy always seeks to support projects that enhance the status of the Arabic language at the local and international levels.
After that, a visual presentation entitled “The Story of the International Arabic Language Day” was presented, prepared by the Educational Center for the Arabic Language for the Gulf States.
The event concluded by honoring the participants in the celebration program and the symposium organized by the Center under the title “Arabic Language and Artificial Intelligence: Promoting Innovation while Preserving Cultural Heritage.” A number of experts in the Arabic language, heritage and culture participated in the symposium, including His Excellency Dr. Abdul Aziz Abdul Rahman Al-Musallam, His Excellency Dr. Muhammad Safi Mosteghanemi, His Excellency Professor Dr. Fawzi Al-Ghazali, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Languages at Mohammed bin Zayed University for Human Sciences, His Excellency Professor Dr. Ahmed bin Abdul Latif Al-Khatib from King Faisal University, and His Excellency Dr. Hossam El-Din Samir Abdel-Al from Mohammed bin Zayed University.
The program also included an accompanying exhibition of manuscripts in the field of the Arabic language in cooperation with the Center for Islamic Manuscripts in Sharjah, where the most important manuscripts of Arabic language sciences, including grammar, morphology, rhetoric, and literature, were displayed.
The Sharjah Islamic Manuscripts Center was honored for their participation in the exhibition, as the Center presented a commemorative shield to His Excellency Professor Saeed Al-Maadawi, in appreciation of their effective contribution to the celebration.
