Trudeau rejects Trump’s threat to annex Canada as a US state

The Canadian Prime Minister on Tuesday rejected US President-elect Donald Trump’s threat that he might use economic power to make Canada the 51st US state.

“There is no chance of Canada becoming part of the United States, because workers in our two countries benefit from being each other’s largest security and trade partners,” Justin Trudeau said in a post on the X website.

In the same context, Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Jolie said that Trump’s comments show a complete lack of understanding of what makes Canada a strong country, stressing that she will never back down in the face of threats.

Trump threatened to impose 25% tariffs on imports from Canada, which exports 75% of all goods and services imported to the United States, criticizing the large trade surplus that favors Canada.
