Trump’s son lands in Greenland amid diplomatic tension

Trump Jr. lands in Greenland (According to section 27a)

In the shadow of his father’s repeated statements regarding his desire to acquire or annex the island, today (Tuesday) Eric Trump, the eldest son of the President-elect of the United States Donald Trump, arrived for a private visit to Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark.

A statement from the Greenland government states that this is a private visit by Trump and that he is not expected to meet any official representative of the authorities in the territory.

Denmark’s Defense Minister, Trolls Lund Poulsen, said today that he shares the position that Greenland is not for sale. According to him, Trump Jr.’s visit to the Danish territory “shows that Greenland and the Arctic region will be part of the international political agenda, in a completely different way than we are used to. This is a natural result of the security situation in the Arctic region.”

According to reports in Denmark, Trump Jr.’s visit is expected to last less than a day and he arrived in the frozen territory to film video clips and record conversations for a podcast in which he participates, but will not hold any meetings with officials.

Already during his first term in the White House, in 2019, Trump expressed interest in purchasing Greenland, but both Denmark and the island’s authorities rejected the idea without official contacts starting.

Last month, ahead of his return to the White House, Trump claimed once again that the American interest is to acquire Greenland and obtain ownership of the territory. “The United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is absolutely necessary, for the purposes of national security and freedom around the world,” Trump wrote on his social network, Truth Social.

The Prime Minister of Greenland responded to Trump’s words and stated: “Greenland is ours. We are not for sale, and we never will be. We must not lose our long fight for freedom.”

During the last month, Trump spoke a lot about the matter of purchasing Greenland and, paraphrasing his famous election slogan, he wrote on Truth Social, his social network: MAKE GREENLAND GREAT AGAIN!. Trump also wrote: “Greenland is a great place, and its people will benefit greatly if, and when, it becomes part of our nation.”

Greenland is an arctic island rich in minerals, oil and gas, which has belonged to Denmark for more than 600 years. Greenland has 56,000 inhabitants living in a semi-autonomous state. Since 2009, the territory has held the option of declaring independence from Denmark, but has so far chosen not to do so.

Greenland is of strategic importance for the US military, which maintains a ballistic missile warning system on the territory: the shortest route from Europe to North America passes through the Arctic island. In addition, the US Air Force has a base in northwest Greenland, the Tula base, and it operates under an agreement signed by Washington with Denmark in 1951.
