Two of the favorites to win Euro 2024 have so far displayed completely different football in the tournament – while France mostly kept a clean sheet and showed impressive defensive prowess, Spain danced on the grass and relied on a tremendous display from their wingers and midfielders. Tonight (Tuesday), the method of Luis de la Fuente and his team was even more effective, as Spain beat France 1:2 en route to their fifth Euro final in history and first since winning in 2012.
The opening was dizzying with a good opportunity for Fabian Ruiz to put Spain in the lead after only five minutes, but the goal came at the other end. In the ninth minute, Kylian Mbappe set up Randall Kolo Moani for the Tricolor’s first field goal of the tournament, as the striker hit the lead from close range and fired up the French crowd in Munich. The tremendous pace continued, and after the first field goal, came the first field goal interception. Lamin Yamal made history when he became the youngest scorer in the history of the Euro at the age of 16 and 362 days with an amazing goal with a kick from outside the box in the 21st minute, and the turnaround was completed 4 minutes later. Dani Olmo broke free to kick in the box, and the ball hit Jules Conde on the way to the net of a helpless Mike Mannion. Despite the right defender’s touch, the goal was scored by Olmo who scored a third game in a row in the tournament.
Didier Deschamps brought on Antoine Griezmann, Bradley Barcola, Olivier Giroud and Eduardo Camabinga during the second half, and despite several opportunities, Spain’s threats were more significant. It was not enough for France with a loss to the better team, who will return to the finals and wait for the winner tomorrow (Wednesday, 22:00, Sport1) between England and the Netherlands.
