The 2024 Game Awards are on tonight, Thursday, December 12, and on the ten year anniversary of the show, reports are to expect some big world premieres. But first, some rather basic info about the show if you want to watch yourself.
As for the show itself, it is in fact the tenth anniversary of the award show, which may be the closest thing the video game industry has to the Oscars, if the Oscars was also about showing 20 trailers for new movies at the same time. Geoff Keighley has effectively outlived E3 and has now turned The Game Awards into the biggest multi-studio showcase of the year. There are always complaints about how the show is more a big ad than a real awards show, but people are watching. The Game Awards continually breaks viewership records every year it airs. In 2023 it had 1.7 million concurrent streams and 118 million viewers total. I would expect 2024 to blow past that.
The show supposedly is going to be bigger than usual. Trusted journalist Jason Schreier, who has lots of inside info has said:
“There is a good chance you’ll see one of two teaser trailers for games that won’t be out for 2026 or later… “There are at least two things that will make you guys reacting say ‘holy s***, I can’t believe it’s here.’”
That could mean anything. I’ve heard that Valve’s Gabe Newell is at the show and when Valve announces anything, it’s a huge deal. I’m not even gonna say it. I’m not even gonna say Half-Life 3 is showing up. …But maybe.
There are any number of huge announcements that could be coming. 2024 was originally supposed to be a “light” year for gaming, but it kind of wasn’t, thought 2025 is likely to be bigger. Everyone is holding their breath for something, anything about GTA 6, supposedly out in fall 2025, though who knows how likely that is. Rockstar usually does their own thing instead of relying on other shows, however, so I do not expect to see it here.
I’ll be posting winners as the show goes on live later tonight. See you then.
