Following the two attacks that targeted thousands of wireless devices owned by Hezbollah in Lebanon on Tuesday and Wednesday, leaving more than 35 dead and at least 3,200 wounded, Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah threatened Israel with “a harsh reckoning and just retribution.”
In his hour-long speech, Hassan Nasrallah acknowledged that the party had suffered “a major security and humanitarian blow, unprecedented in the history of the resistance in Lebanon.” He also acknowledged the strong impact of the two attacks on the morale of the party’s leadership and fighters, but then said, “This major and powerful blow did not bring us down and will not bring us down…”
Nasrallah pointed out that Israel was seeking to destroy the command and control system and spread chaos among the party’s fighters, “but that did not happen even for a single moment,” he said.
In an attempt to reassure the party’s supporters, Nasrallah said, “The Israeli enemy has crossed all laws, controls, and red lines… These explosions did not affect the structure of the resistance and its high readiness on the ground… What happened did not affect the leadership system or the presence on the fronts.”
Nasrallah described the communications device bombings as a terrorist act and a massacre in which “the Israeli enemy was seeking to kill 4,000 people on Tuesday and 5,000 others on Wednesday.” He considered the two attacks a “declaration of war.”
Regarding the ongoing investigation into the security breach that the party was exposed to, Nasrallah revealed that there is “a nearly definitive result regarding the circumstances of the bombings… and we will arrive at certain results within a short time, and then the necessary action will be taken.”
Regarding the party’s plan and the nature of its response to the two attacks, the Secretary-General of Hezbollah said, “I will not talk about the time, place, or timing of the expected response. The news is what you will see, not what you hear.”
Hassan Nasrallah sent messages carrying clear challenges to Israel, saying: “The Lebanese front will not stop before the war on Gaza stops, despite the sacrifices, martyrs and consequences… I say to Netanyahu and Galant, you will not be able to return the residents to the north. The only way to return them to their areas is to stop the aggression on Gaza and the West Bank.”
While the Secretary-General of Hezbollah was delivering his speech, Israeli fighter jets broke the sound barrier in the skies of the Lebanese capital and its southern suburbs. The Israeli air force launched raids on a number of towns in southern Lebanon.
The Israeli military also issued a number of statements throughout Thursday stressing its efforts to create a security reality on the border with Lebanon in preparation for the return of residents to their homes, in implementation of pledges made by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday to return tens of thousands of Israelis from the northern border areas to their homes, amid escalating tensions with Hezbollah.
In the same context, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galant said that the “center of gravity” of military operations and war is moving to the north, on the border with Lebanon.
At the same time, the Israeli Security Cabinet authorized the Prime Minister and Defense Minister to take “defensive and offensive steps” against the Lebanese Hezbollah.
Now that Hassan Nasrallah has spoken after the explosions of the communications devices in Lebanon, without rushing to give Israel a public opportunity to launch an open war on Lebanon, all eyes are on Benjamin Netanyahu’s government and what it will do to achieve its goal of returning the residents of the northern border areas with Lebanon to their towns, at a time when Nasrallah threatened Netanyahu and Galant in a tone of defiance, saying, “The only way to return the residents to their areas is to stop the aggression on Gaza and the West Bank… You will not be able to do whatever you want… This is the challenge between us….”
- Why did Hassan Nasrallah remain vague about the nature of the party’s response to Israel?
- Why did he raise the bar of his challenge to Israel despite his recognition of its military superiority?
- What are Hezbollah’s most important messages to both Israel and the Palestinians?
- Will Israel open the Lebanese front in response to Hezbollah’s challenges?
- Will the confrontation between them enter the bone-breaking stage?
We will discuss these and other topics with you in the episode on Friday, September 20.
